PROGRAM RIMBA CERDIK: 3M LEARNING IN THE WILD5

UNIVERSITI PENDIDIKAN SULTAN IDRIS SK METHODIST TANJONG MALIM

Literacy. Before the programme, many students struggle to recognise basic letters and words, with limited vocabulary outside their immediate environment. Reading is seen as a purely classroom activity. After the programme, students can recognise and read simple words related to daily life and nature. Increased enthusiasm for reading through nature-themed stories and games.

Writing. Before, handwriting skills were underdeveloped; there was difficulty forming letters and words. Limited ability to express ideas in written form. After, students improved their handwriting and ability to form sentences. Students can label objects in their environment and create short written reflections or stories.

Numeracy. Before: Difficulty with basic counting and number recognition; abstract math concepts not linked to daily life. After, the ability to count, add, and subtract using real-world objects (e.g., seeds, stones, leaves). Better grasp of numeracy through experiential, nature-based learning.

In terms of learning motivation, before the programme the students show interest in schoolwork; learning is viewed as separate from community life. But after the programme, they show higher motivation, as learning is linked to their culture, surroundings, and practical skills. Students show excitement in attending sessions.

Cultural connections also become stronger and they pride as indigenous knowledge and language are incorporated into lessons. Students see their traditions reflected in learning activities. Hence, showed improved confidence in expressing themselves through reading aloud, storytelling, and explaining activities to peers and visitors.
